Aquaponics Greenhouse
Aquaponics is a method of growing produce that combines aquaculture (growing fish) and Hydroponics (a technique of growing plants in a nutrient-rich water-based environment). In our aquaponic system, the fish are fed a non-GMO diet. They produce nutrient-rich waste that is rapidly converted into fertilizer by the healthy bacteria in our water. This water is sent out through our hydroponic system to feed our plants and flows back in our closed-loop design to repeat the cycle of becoming fish-fertilized water that nourishes our plant system.
At Genesis Mountain Farm we have one of the largest aquaponic food growing facilities in the Pacific Northwest, capable of producing 1200+ heads of produce per week. Our closed-loop aquaponic operation is comprised of a 7000-gallon hydroponic plant-growing system and a fish house that contains four 500-gallon tanks that home 100 Koi fish and 300 Tilapia. These fish cohabitate in a beneficial polyculture environment.
Our aquaponics greenhouse operates 365 days per year and allows us to grow a variety of pesticide-free produce that includes Herbs, Lettuces, Asian Greens, Kale, Chard, Microgreens, Ginger, Turmeric (and more) using (95%) less water. Our products are available to the community via our Genesis Mountain Farm CSA Membership Program and through supportive local grocers and restaurants.
